Is the i3-5005u better. Read here more
You may feel strange while looking at the thread title, comparing an i3 CPU with a Celeron CPU?
Correct, but we are comparing an 8th Gen Celeron with a 5th Gen i3 here.
Recently we are seeing some Retro Core i3-5005u mini PCs being sold on the market,
with a higher price tag than the latest Gemini Lake Celeron/Pentium devices.
The question is: Are they better?
Here is a break down:
A.) Single core performance - the i3-5005u is better because of its higher base frequency
B.) Multi-core performance - Gemini Lake N4100 is much better than i3-5005u (true 4 cores vs 2 cores)
C.) iGPU performance - both are weak and not suitable for modern 3D gaming anyway
D.) iGPU features - Gemini Lake is way better as it comes with 4K VP9/HEVC decoder/encoder,
and built-in HDCP 2.2 and PlayReady 3.x keys, thus much better for consumption of video contents, especially UHD 4K contents.
E.) Video output: Gemini Lake supports 4K60Hz max, i3-5005u supports 4K30Hz max only.
F.) Memory support - DDR4-2400 (Gemini Lake) vs DDR3-1600 (Broadwell-U)
G.) Energy efficiency - Gemini Lake is better (6-10W vs 15W)
5th Gen i3 isn't better than 8th Gen Celeron/Pentium,
be wise about making your purchase decision.
